I can easily be classified as a "visual bliss junkie." That's one of the reasons that I'm a fan of science fiction and why I cover the genre for ActionAGoGo.com.
Every week I scan dozens of sources for information and art that I believe worth sharing. Sci-fi is a focus, for it's not only aesthetically pleasing, but also shows the realm of what may yet be.
Am generally not a follower of things from the realm of fantasy, swords and sorcerers. Much of whats out there tends to be overly derivative of Frank Frazetta. Also, many artists seem to have the perspective that if the battle axe and bosom are massive enough, they'll draw attention.
However, last night, scrolling through the Tumblr machine, an image caught my eye. Traced its source and was met with a feast of purity. I'd found the deviantART page of Pablo Fernandez.
Yes, the subject matter is archetypal imagery of the fantasy realm that in lesser hands would simply be redundant. But the skill of Mr. Fernandez is exquisite. Paradoxically, the artwork is crisp, yet muted. Every creation has countless depths of color. The subtle nuances of the details are almost hypnotic. And the one factor that stands out the most for me is the blending of light and shadow.
If he were alive in the 17th century, kings and bishops would be paying him to paint the chambers of their palaces and churches.
Somebody please give this man a contract with Dreamworks or Bethesda Softworks right now.
If you'd like to see more of his efforts, you can check them out on deviantART where he goes by the moniker TheBastardSon. Or visit Parblo Fernandez Artwork on Facebook. I guarantee you, it's worth the time. True art is a rarity.
