Brian De Palma's 1976 film adaptation of Carrie is an excellent horror film. It exposes the ugliness of teenage angst and naiveté, then spirals uncontrollably into an unsettling revenge fantasy where nobody comes out on top. Needless to say that any attempt to cash in on the original (The Rage: Carrie 2, anyone) is going to be met with instant skepticism by me.
Despite the involvement of director Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry), and the fantastic casting choices of Julianne Moore and Chloe-Grace Moretz, the initial trailer just kinda piqued my interest in the upcoming remake. However, the viral marketing campaign has really gone out of it's way to give the film buzz.
A few months ago, I mentioned on Twitter that there was a phone number floating around online that allowed you to "call" Carrie White and eavesdrop on the dramatic bible-thumping that goes on within her home. It seems that the marketing minds over at MGM and Screen Gems weren't done. In the following clip, unsuspecting yuppies are treated to a Kingsian freak out inside a local New York coffee shop. Maybe I'm just a sucker for Candid Camera-styled practical jokes (Bad Grandpa, anyone?), but I might give this a chance based off of the movie's commitment to scaring the bejeezus out of its potential audience.
Carrie drops this Friday.
